Here, at the Genoa ImmunoPathology Center (GIPC), we study how immune cells and other cell populations are organized and interact within tissue, combining morphology with multiplex immunohistochemistry, digital pathology, and molecular profiling.

The GIPC is a pathology research institute based at the Department of Surgical Sciences and Integrated Diagnostics, University of Genoa. Our work focuses on gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and transplant pathology across neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease.

Our Research Approach
Tissue-tethered Immunopathology
We examine cellular phenotypes, spatial relationships, and tissue compartments to generate and test hypotheses about disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.
We use image-based methods to transform tissue architecture into measurable, analyzable data while preserving its morphological and spatial context.
Quality and Reproducibility
We prioritize fit-for-purpose methods, appropriate controls, transparent analyses, and cautious interpretation of exploratory findings. This is particularly important when evaluating prognostic and predictive biomarkers that may inform clinical decision-making and patient management.
Green Pathology
We investigate practical ways to reduce the environmental footprint of diagnostic and research pathology without compromising scientific quality, diagnostic accuracy or safety.
